Healing, Health, and Wellness-- A Parish Nurse's Wish List

Luisa Porrata, RN, MPH, CCAP/T, CIMI

Luisa Porrata, RN, believes that being a parish nurse allows her to get to know her patients’ life stories.

Parish nursing is spiritual nursing.

When I was a little girl, I played at being a nurse with the plants and flowers at my aunt’s country home in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. Every summer when I would visit from NYC, I would use the plants and flowers to make my aromatic poultices and gently apply them to my cousins’ imaginary wounds.

Background:

Infection Control (IC) programs are confronted with the challenge of designing systems to balance shrinking resources while prioritizing surveillance. It is well documented; surgical site infections (SSIs) are the second most common cause of hospital acquired (HA) infections. In this era of pay for performance it is critical for IC and Performance Improvement (PI) professionals to utilize innovative methods to maximize surveillance opportunities and to provide performance feedback. Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) is a 900-bed tertiary care facility in New York City. In order to develop a reliable screening tool for identifying SSIs in bowel surgery while minimizing chart review the Departments of PI, Information Management (IM), Surgery and IC collaborated to utilize our administrative data support system (TSI), to screen for HA wound infections

Cultural Similarities and Disparities Among Hispanic Populations when Providing Culturally Competent Care

Submitted by nahn admin on August 21, 2006 - 10:29am.

Introduction

by
Helen Christina Ballestas, MSN, RN, CRRN

So, you say you are Hispanic and are proud of your heritage. But, are you fully competent in caring for other Hispanics non-native to your own country? Recently, at the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), in Phoenix, Arizona, a poster was presented depicting the differences and similarities within Hispanic cultures. And, although there are twenty-three Spanish speaking countries in the world today, the cultures within the culture are as different in tone and hues as are the colors of the rainbow.
