The 3rd annual conference of the nahn ny chapter

Mapping the Future of Health Care: How Will Nursing Transform and Lead the Change?"

October 7, 2011 marked the Third Annual Conference of the NAHN NYChapter titled " Mapping the Future of Health Care: How Will Nursing Transform and Lead the Change?" held at the Phillips Center at Beth Israel Medical Center.

We extend a warm thank you to all the presenters who donated their valuable time to share their expertise on relevant and impactful topics to Health Care Providers in todays very volatile health care world. A myriad of topics relevant to the IOM recommendations and Health Care Reform legislature; innovative management of Alzheimer; the dramatic tearful presentation by Sam, a Leukemia two time survivor; management of HIV; leadership and workforce nursing conversations and programs geared to the development of the student nurse and Latino youth, made the day not only a power house of information but also a unique learning experience. The very intense learning experience culminated in a very relaxing meditative experience enjoyed and needed by all, a testimony to the expertise of the closing presenter.

We would like to thank the following presenters: Dr C Kovner, Dr J Torres, Samuel Roberson, Airam da Silva, M Hidalgo, J Corsica, R Sullivan, Dr B Schaubb, Dr H Morales, Dr J Frumenti, Dr A Pasci , M Beltran and Maria Elena Pina Fonti.

We thank W Morrison, S. Voytush and Raquel Ortiz, Dominic Fonti, the student nurses and graduate nurses that participated in the mechanics of the conference and the very hard working Board.

A special thanks to all the participants, that once again, placed trust in the delivery of a sound learning experience by the NY Chapter of NAHN and were not disappointed as per their evaluations and comments. We look forward to another successful conference next year. Que Dios nos cuide.

Please enjoy the pictures and look in the near future for the video of the days events.

NATIONAL 3rd annual conference

Thank you to all the members and students that attended the National Association of Hispanic Nurses Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

The Vegas sidewalks were hot, the sun was scorching, the Conference was insightful and the NY Chapter NAHN students were spectacular. Dressed in their black and white professional dress code they represented the Chapter in a very professional and ethical manner. The complements regarding the NY Chapter students were as often as the Water works display on the Vegas strip.
The students participated in the mechanics of the Conference on a daily bases, participated in the varied workshops, assisted with the voting process and offered very insightful comments throughout the workshops. The students will provide individual summaries of their lessons learned during the Conference and will be available to read by viewers at a later date.

Adrian Juarez PhD student from the NY Chapter presented on "Contextualizing the Individual Socio Cultural and Structural Factors that Influence HIV Testing Behaviors in NYC Mexicans". He was captivating and on target with his presentation.

The Conference was not just about work it also afforded all, time for enjoying all the fun that Las Vegas has to offer. The Board had dinner with the students as a thank you for a job well done and attended a hilarious Comedy Show where the endorphins from laughing were released by both students and Board members.

We extend a PROUD CONGRATULATIONS to all our students for a stellar representation of the NY Chapter of NAHN.

Thank you:
Genesis Cava, Erika Mc Neal, Wendy Reyes, Marlene Aquino, Kenneth Narvaez, Angelo Garcia, Maria Beltran and Adrian Juarez

First Icla da Silva 5 K Walk / Run 2011

It was a splendid, breeze autumn day on Roosevelt Island, as the NAHN NY Chapter members made their way to the finish line at the First Icla da Silva 5K Walk / Run (some NAHN team members running the 5K in 23 mins and under). While others, took advantage of the beautiful day and great conversation as they walked the track by the water. All were greeted and awarded a medal as they came to the finish line.
Thanks to the efforts of the members, their families, friends and a generous sponsorship from Carmine Polito ,owner of Portofino Restaurant, for $500.00. Team NAHN managed to donate a sum of $ $972.00 to the Icla da Silva Foundation. Good job, keep up the good work and the dedication to the Chapters' mission of serving the community.
